On Friday, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, met the delegation of the European Parliament to discuss a wide range of issues regarding cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union and membership of Ukraine in the international parliamentary organizations.

In the beginning of the meeting V.Lytvyn briefed on the present-day situation in Ukraine, drawing attention to the prospective cooperation between the President of Ukraine, the Government and The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. As to the criticism on the part of certain political forces that doubt the formation of the parliamentary coalition, V.Lytvyn stated "The Constitutional Court shall either confirm or dissolve these doubts."  The Head of the Parliament believes that "The Constitutional Court Resolution will determine further development of events." At present, he deems necessary to organize work and implement declared promises and intentions. V.Lytvyn predicted that the parliamentary coalition would not extend. However, the authorities should take into account the activity of a powerful opposition. "Therefore, it will definitely supervise their activities", the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is convinced.

In their turn, the deputies of the European Parliament stressed the importance of political stability in Ukraine and agreed with the necessity to implement the declared promises. Marek Sivec, Deputy of the European Parliament, stated that commencement of the Lisbon Treaty made the European Parliament more powerful.  "I hope that we will use the extra possibilities to foster relations with The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine," he stated. According to the deputies of the European Parliament, adoption of the latest resolution of the European Parliament confirmed that the European Parliament "is one of the most open European institutions for Ukraine." They confirmed the willingness of the European Parliament "to support Ukraine and Ukrainians in their European pursuits."

M. Sivec appreciated formation of a powerful opposition in the Ukrainian Parliament. "The criticism will make the Government either correct the mistakes or prevent them." He recommended that the opposition worked efficiently, not calling for the early elections.

The participants of the meeting also discussed the grounds for setting up delegations of the Eastern partnership initiative delegate members in the EURONEST Parliamentary Assembly.
